Letter from Donald Friend to Brian Johnstone, 31 March 1955.

Dear Brian
Thanks for your letter & the beautiful cheque. This is obviously my year, everything goes so well. The Blake as you can imagine, both the Prize & the Darnell purchase, gave me the greatest thrill. I'm going to write Peter Benny to ask him if he wants Paul Haefliger to write an essay for the Quarterly this year.
Rumour is quite right about my coming north -John Stevens (Bon Drysdale's brother) & I will be leaving here at the end of April. He's going to Townsville, I to Cairns (in the Jeep)
I'll bring what oils I can. I haven't many alas: I should be staying here painting - in fact, a lot of my time just now is spent writing a book in Hill End - a sort of scurrilous historical review, and just at the moment my days go between that and building a fence - very necessary - to keep stock out of my garden: the old fence has had it - Love to you both
as ever Donald
P.S. I hope your notorious floods have subsided & the Brisbane River has swept away the art works from Brisbane walls, creating a huge demand for replacements!!
