The Johnstone Gallery archive exhibition catalogues
The Johnstone Gallery produced catalogues to accompany most of its exhibitions and, as the years progressed, the catalogues reflected a gallery that was growing in prosperity. Many artists commented that The Johnstone Gallery catalogues were the most professional produced by any Australian commercial gallery.
At first they consisted of a simple folded cardboard format, with lists of works and a paragraph or two about the artist and/or exhibition. In later years they developed into lavish productions with colour plates and short essays about the artist. In some cases, portraits (drawn or photographic) of the artists were created specifically for publication. The catalogues usually included a complete list of works, making them an invaluable resource.
Exhibition catalogues are included in The Johnstone Gallery archive scrapbooks; there is also a collection of loose catalogues, many of which were the Gallery's working copies, and so are annotated with further details.
